Destination Dessert: Wanderlust for the Sweet-Toothed

by Yasmin Newman on January 7, 2009

For the last week, amongst enjoying time with friends in a beautiful beach town in the north of New South Wales called Byron Bay, I have been sifting through a stockpile of thoughts amassed throughout the year - ‘too busy to deal with’, ‘too big to deal with’, ‘never . even. considered’ - and similarly, sorting out my list of ‘to dos’.

Number one on my list, like that packet of semolina placed smartly on the front of the shelf as a reminder to use, but sitting just that little way past regular reaching level, has been my plan to tour the world - one dessert at a time.

Travel, undeniably, is as much a part of me as my love for food. The two go hand-in-hand really, like the heads and tails of culture’s coin - to understand one, you must understand the other. The trips I have taken have given me a strong and first-hand knowledge about food, whilst eating in these distant lands has taught me what these cultures, fascinating as they are diverse, are all about.

So with wanderlust always charming its way into my thoughts - a seductive whisper here and a sweet sigh there - I thought what better way to appease the mistress of my mind than with an expedition around the world and a dessert from each to indulge the goddess that is my stomach.

I hope that you will all join me on these adventures* with forks in hand and taste buds a-ready. The series will be brought to life through different destinations, desserts or ingredients, so please feel free to suggest an obscure fruit or a favourite region. Then, simply jump on board!

First stop: Buenos Aires… coming soon!

* Just a note: these adventures will be both virtual and ‘real’ on my soon-to-come trip abroad. For both, I can’t wait!

Is this journey real or metaphorical? In either case I’m looking forward to the desserts!
