Queen ‘loves chocolate’ claims Darren McGrady
After an entire year of royal residences being closed to the public due to the COVID pandemic, the Queen has opened up the gardens at Buckingham Palace for the first time to the public. This is especially good as Britain has just entered a massive heatwave so the weather will be perfect for visiting. Darren McGrady, the former royal chef to the Queen has released many recipes over the years which he used to cook for the Royal Family.
He has recently shared a recipe for the Queen’s favourite summer drink: Pimm’s, which contains her favourite spirit Gin.
McGrady says this would be the perfect drink to bring to Buckingham Palace for a picnic with your friends and family.
Compared to the usual Pimm’s, Lemonade, and a slice of lemon, McGrady says the Queen’s Pimm’s is like a “fruit salad” with seven different ingredients.
It contains, sliced oranges, cherries, lemons, strawberries, cucumber, mint, and borage.
McGrady says to begin by placing the garnish in the glass.
This can be as little or as much fruit as one would like, however, the Queen likes at least one piece of each fruit in her specially prepared glass.
Next, the glass of Pimm’s needs lots of ice, perfect for the garden parties in summer at the palace.
At Buckingham Palace, each piece of ice would be placed in the glass individually with silver tongs.
The next step is to fill the glass with one part Pimm’s to two or three parts lemonade.
McGrady says: “Some members of the Royal Family measured it the other way round, and I’m not saying who!”
This royal chef was the personal chef to Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Princess of Wales and Princes’ William and Harry for fifteen years.
He has also cooked for Presidents in America, including Presidents’ Ford, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, and Bush.
Another recipe that McGrady recently shared which the Queen loves to consume in summer are pennies.
These are strawberry jam sandwiches cut into the shape of an old English penny.
Queen Elizabeth grew up eating these as a snack, and they remain her favourite summertime food today.
McGrady would make homemade strawberry jam in Scotland using handpicked strawberries outside Balmoral Castle for the Queen especially.
She also enjoys cucumber sandwiches with cream cheese and spearmint, and thinly sliced cucumber peels.
Queen Elizabeth enjoys these at Afternoon Tea during the summertime as do many other members of the Royal Family.
The crusts are always cut off and the sandwich is prepared in two bite-size portions.
All these posh, royal recipes can be easily made at home and brought to Buckingham Palace this summer, ready to be enjoyed.
