Nearly one in five Brits have already stocked their cupboards – for Christmas

Nearly one in five adults already have a cupboard full of Christmas food – having stocked up in the sales, a study has found. Chocolate, wine, Christmas pudding, and stuffing are the most common foods to be stashed-away during the year.

The poll of 2,000 adults, who celebrate Yuletide, even found 39 percent would buy all their festive food months before, if it didn’t run the risk of going off.

More than a third (35 percent) are looking to reduce their festive outgoings compared to last year, and the same percentage are worried about the cost of their Christmas meal this year.

The survey was commissioned by Aldi, which has announced a “Christmas Price Lock”, available during the festive period.

Prices of key food staples, including a range of whole fresh turkeys, turkey crowns, pigs in blankets, Christmas puddings, and festive vegetables, will remain the same as they were in 2022.

The research found as people look to curb their expenditure, the main foods which they will cut back on – or remove altogether – include pigs in blankets (27 percent), roast potatoes (27 percent), and even the beloved turkey (28 percent).

This is despite turkey (26 percent), roast potatoes (18 percent), and pigs in blankets (11 percent) being the one item they feel they simply couldn’t live without this Christmas.

To further reduce outgoings, one in five are also planning to spend the Christmas Day meal with fewer people – going from four to three this year.

Aunties and uncles topped the list of those most likely to be uninvited (15 percent), closely followed by mothers-in-law (12 percent) and fathers-in-law (11 percent), the OnePoll research found.

And the selfless among those polled (16 percent) are even considering uninviting themselves from Christmas, to save costs for family and friends.

Richard Thornton, communications director at Aldi UK, said: “We believe that everyone is entitled to the best Christmas they can have, which is why we’re introducing the Aldi Christmas Price Lock to help our customers up and down the country enjoy the Christmas dinner they deserve with the ones they love.”
