The Secret to Free Starbucks Refills Has Been Hiding in Plain Sight

If you’re a frequent coffee drinker, at some point you’ve probably wondered: “Does Starbucks offer free refills?”

The answer is yes! But also no. Let me explain:

According to Starbucks’ refill policy, you have to use the chain’s app with a registered Starbucks Card to pay for your first drink. No app and card = no refill.

The policy only applies to brewed coffee (hot, iced coffee, or cold brew) and tea (hot or iced). Sadly, those Pumpkin Spice Lattes you’re planning to order in the coming months will not be covered.

To claim your second beverage, you have to present the same Starbucks Card that you used to purchase your first drink during the same store visit—so you can’t leave and come back a few hours later expecting a refill. I know what you’re probably thinking and, no, drive-thru runs don’t count.

Here’s what we’ve learned today:

  • You CAN get free refills at Starbucks.
  • The refill policy only applies to brewed coffee and tea.
  • You must be a member of the Starbucks Rewards Program to participate.
  • No funny business—you can only refill your drink during the same store visit. No leaving and no drive-thru trickery.

Enjoy your extra cup o’ joe, tomorrow, caffeine fiends.
