While exercise is important, abs are made in the kitchen. Here are Dr Michael Mosley’s best fixes for rapid fat loss that anyone can try.

Adopting a Mediterranean diet is a great way to slim down.

The Fast 800 diet simply asks that dieters consume only 800 calories per day.

To stay nourished and full, Dr Michael advocates for a high protein, low carbohydrate diet.

The Fast 800 website stated: “Research shows that a moderately low carbohydrate, Mediterranean-style diet has the unique power to restore your body’s ability to reach its ideal weight.”

And while it is an excellent weight loss method, it is equally good for maintaining weight loss and making the number on the scales “stay” put.

This is because it is easy to achieve, and allows dieters to also enjoy foods they like, rather than restricting themselves which ultimately results in overindulging.

Not only is a Mediterranean diet an easy, accessible way to slim down, it has a whole host of health benefits, one being that it “reduces your risk of chronic disease”.

The Fast 800 website stated: “The low-carb Mediterranean-style diet is low in sugar and starchy carbs while packed full of disease-fighting nutrients.

“This combination helps control your blood sugar levels, while enjoying protein, fibre and healthy fats to keep you feeling fuller for longer.”

Dieters can enjoy foods such as eggs, which will “keep you feeling fuller for longer compared to cereal or toast”, so this is a fantastic way to start the day.

Dr Michael also recommends diversifying vegetable consumption: “From dark leafy greens to bright red tomatoes and purple aubergine, more variety of colours means more variety of nutrients.”

One piece of good news is that fats are not banned.

In fact, Dr Michael encourages dieters to incorporate healthy fats into their diets.

When hungry, reach for avocado based snacks, which keeps dieters “satiated”, less likely to reach for junk or processed food.

A handful of nuts also contains healthy fats, as well as being high in fibre.

One top weight loss tip: “Almond or coconut flour makes a good low-carb alternative to flour for baking – yes, you can bake healthy treats!”

And speaking of treats, it’s a myth that weight loss equals misery and deprivation – in fact, The Fast 800 advocates for them.

The website stated: “Research shows that resveratrol, a compound present in red wine (as well as in blueberries, cranberries and cocoa) can contribute to the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet.

“So, if you would like to complement your recipes with the occasional glass of red or piece of dark chocolate, you can.”

For those trying the 5:2, 800 calorie diet or intermittent fasting, “just be more mindful on fasting days as the calories can be significant”.

Finally, while reaching for fruit is always better for you than a decadent slice of cake, some fruits are more superior than others in the weight loss game.

“Enjoy berries, apples and pears, which have less sugar than sweet, tropical fruits such as mango, pineapple and melon.”
