Keto diet: Nutritionist reveals the best foods to make the best of the weight loss plan
Keto diet foods are low in carb and high in fat.
The plan is designed to put the body into a state of ketosis.
This is when the body is burning fat as its primary source of food, rather than carbohydrates.
Those on the diet track their macros, meaning the main nutrients in their diet, to stay on track.
Keto diet: Best foods to make the best of the weight loss plan revealed by a nutritionist
The usual breakdown for a keto diet is to get 70 per cent to 80 per cent of your daily calories from fat.
Twenty to 25 per cent should come from fat and five – 10 per cent from carbs.
So what are the best foods to eat on the keto diet? Nutritionist Hebe Mills, founder of Hebe Mills Nutrition, is an associate nutritionist.
She runs her website and Instagram account where she posts recipes and wellness tips after being diagnosed with gluten intolerance and IBS.
She said: “It’s important to try and include a variety of foods while embarking on the diet to ensure you’re getting a range of nutrients.
“Focus on foods with a varied nutrient profile including.”
Best Keto foods
- Seafood including salmon, shellfish and tuna
- Non-starchy vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale and cauliflower
- Avocados, nuts and seeds
What is Hebe’s best diet pick for weight loss?
She told Express.co.uk the key to is to be in a calorie deficit.
“The best way to lose weight is to follow a diet in which you are in a calorie deficit – exercising and reducing the number of calories you are consuming on a daily basis will lead to weight loss and doesn’t require giving anything up.
“Including lots of fruit and vegetables in your diet will naturally make you feel fuller during meal times and will help you to exercise portion control.
“For example, if you’re having a spag bol for supper, why not include some veggies in the Bolognese, have a smaller portion and give yourself a large serving of broccoli on the side to make sure you feel full after eating.”
However, she also had a warning for followers of the keto weight loss diet.
She said: “Be mindful of the high energy content in a number of foods recommended in the diet.
“Fat contains more calories than carbohydrate (which isn’t a bad thing in the slightest!) so it may be worth monitoring your energy intake if the purpose of the diet is for weight loss.”
Eating a calorie deficit is key for weight loss, and so those eating a new high fat diet may mistakenly eat more calories than they are used to switching to a low-carb diet.
