Dr Michael Mosley popularised the 5:2 diet, Fast 800 and The Fast 800 Keto diets, and is a big believer in the benefits of rapid weight loss over slow and steady methods. He divulged that certain chocolates can have huge health and weight loss benefits.
Whichever weight loss diet you are following, it’s extremely difficult to avoid dessert or sweet snacks absolutely all of the time.
Dr Michael revealed that slimmers can still enjoy certain treats whilst losing weight.
The official Fast 800 website stated: “An occasional treat is fine. Research shows that resveratrol, a compound present in red wine (as well as in blueberries, cranberries and cocoa) can contribute to the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet.”
According to Dr Michael, the Mediterranean Diet is a lifestyle in which people enjoy a low-carb, low-sugar diet.
Instead, they fuel themselves with ingredients that are “packed full of disease-fighting nutrients”.
“This combination helps control your blood sugar levels, while enjoying protein, fibre and healthy fats to keep you feeling fuller for longer.”
Foods commonly associated with the Mediterranean Diet include leafy greens, fruit, wholegrain carbohydrates, oily fish, healthy proteins, avocados and nuts.
The expert continued: “So if you would like to complement your recipes with the occasional glass of red wine or piece of dark chocolate, you can.”
Better yet, melt or grate some dark chocolate over some blueberries and cranberries for a truly Mediterranean dessert.
Dark chocolate is defined as chocolate with between 50 – 90 percent cocoa solids, cocoa butter, and sugar.
Milk chocolate, on the other hand, contains anywhere from 10 – 50 percent cocoa solids, cocoa butter, milk in some form, and sugar.
White chocolate does not contain any cocoa solids at all but rather is made from cocoa butter, sugar, and milk.
Those hoping to lose weight and reap the health benefits of chocolate should stick to the richer dark chocolate as opposed to its more sugary counterparts.
In a recent Instagram video, Dr Michael encouraged slimmers to stick to the “really dark stuff”.
One of its tremendous benefits is its impact on blood pressure. It is also “packed” with flavonols which feed the good bacteria in your body and act as probiotics.
For those who aren’t huge fans of dark chocolate, yoghurt makes a great healthy and weight-friendly dessert.
Dr Michael celebrates dairy and urged slimmers to opt for full-fat yoghurts – although in moderation as these can be high in calories.
Another option for dessert is fruit, which is a huge element of the Mediterranean Diet.
However, according to the expert, in terms of weight loss there are some fruits that are more superior than others.
Dr Michael encouraged slimmers to snack on low-calorie fruits such as berries, apples and pears, rather than sugary mango, pineapple and melon.
