Woman, 50, loses half of her body weight and is now dress size eight
Emma, 52, took to the skies and went on a zip line adventure with her husband to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary after previously being too heavy to do it.
The mother-of-two lost half of her body weight thanks to weight loss surgery in Weight Loss Riga, and went from 23 and a half stone to 10st 6lbs.
Emma shared her story and said: “I had yo-yo dieted all my life, I tried every diet available and I could never seem to keep the weight off.
“When I was at my heaviest, I was pre-diabetic, I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol and I just didn’t feel like myself.
“I wouldn’t have any full-length mirrors in the house, just small ones so I could only see my face and hair. I would also hide in the back of photographs so you could only see my head. That’s how much being heavier controlled my life.”

Emma admitted that she had a lifelong struggle with food and her biggest vices were chocolate, beer, wine, cake and fried chicken.
As none of the diets she tried worked in the long term, she decided to go for weight loss surgery after seeing how successful a friend’s weight loss surgery had been.
After having bariatric surgery, she had the ongoing support of an on-call nutritionist who helped her maintain the weight and she is now proud to be a dress size eight.
Emma learned how to have a “healthier relationship with food”. She explained: “Being heavier controlled so many aspects of my life, I wasn’t able to do fun activities with my children and I couldn’t live my life to the full.

“I tried all the diets and I tried the gym, but I’d catch a glimpse of myself in a full-length mirror and it would really upset me as it was the only place I would see my full body.
“When I look back at pictures of myself, I think I look horrific. But now that I’ve lost the weight I finally feel like myself again and I’m happy with how I look.
“The support of Weight Loss Riga’s aftercare team and nutritionist has been phenomenal and made such a positive impact on my life. The surgery was only a part of the process, it’s what I do after it that drops the weight and keeps it off.”
Being 13 stone lighter, Emma is now able to do things that “simply weren’t possible before”. She explained: “Now I can do fun activities that I wasn’t able to before such as Zumba and hiking with my children, whereas before I just couldn’t do it due to my weight.
“When I was heavy, food controlled my life. Now that I’ve slimmed down, I control my own life at last.”
Dr Igors Troickis, leading bariatric surgeon at Weight Loss Riga, commented: “We have been delighted with Emma’s progress and it’s so rewarding to see how much she has achieved. Our patients receive extensive support after their procedure, including nutritional guidance if required, and we empower them to make positive changes to their lifestyles.”
Her transformation has also changed how she sees herself, “for the better”. One thing she always wanted to do was zipline with her husband, “but I was above the maximum weight and it just wasn’t possible”.
She said: “My husband and I are going to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary by finally doing the zipline adventure, and it will be a nice way to celebrate how far we’ve come on my weight loss journey.”
